Under Display Headlightâ„¢

There is a growing demand for headlight designs that not only provide optimal illumination but also enhance the vehicle's aesthetic appeal. A particular focus is on making the entire headlight assembly look like Daytime Running Lights (DRL), known for their uniform and visually appealing illumination.

The desired outcome is a seamless integration where the main headlight system and DRL not only coexist but complement each other, creating a unified front-end appearance. This integration is not just a matter of aesthetics; it also has practical implications in terms of lighting efficiency and vehicle recognition.
Several companies have tried to integrate main headlight system and DRL recently. For example, Volvo EX90 implemented new technology that hides main headlight system behind DRL. They attached actuator on DRL and placed main headlight system behind DRL.

However, the industry confronts a significant barrier: the current technology does not support the integration of main headlights and DRL in the desired manner. This gap presents both a challenge and an opportunity for innovation.

Putting an actuator was a great idea but it holds both advantages and limitations. Some of the limitations are delays during the transition and the long-term reliability of the servo motor. The limitations I mentioned occur mainly from the actuator. I have developed a solution that can completely integrate the main headlights behind DRL without any moving parts, including the actuator.

I have developed a solution that can completely integrates main headlights into DRL, it looks like DRL without compromising the ability of both main headlight and DRL.
I call the technology "Under Display Headlight".

In short, the beam from the main headlights penetrates through the front display layer. The whole headlight looks like surface emission light. This can be achieved without compromising the ability of both the main headlight and DRL. I call the technology "Under Display Headlight". I will explain the technology briefly below.

Before we learn about Under Display Headlight, lets briefly talk about the differences between Main Headlight system and DRL (Daytime Running Light).

Main Headlight System

  • Main Headlight System serve the primary purpose of illuminating the road in dark conditions. It meant to be used for long distance lighting system that DRL can't achieve.
  • Emitting High-intensity light to straight direction.
  • Headlight cover or shell is made of transparent material that allows light to pass through without obstruction.

Daytime Running Light (DRL)

  • Daytime running lights are used during the day to increase vehicle visibility by pedestrian. These days it's crucial design point of cars. Sometimes it makes the theme of the car.
  • Emitting low-intensity light to various direction.
  • It often has light diffuser on the surface of the shell, so it uniformly illuminates across its surface. Therefore, it has non-transparent outer shell. Light diffuser is intended to obstruct with the light.

I think that gave us brief idea of both systems and why it's hard to integrate those lights to a single piece.

Back to the question, how do lights from the main headlight system penetrate the display in front?
The display we are using has unique characteristics. Our display will have a little gap between each pixel. Almost every display we use, do not have artificial gap between Most of the displays we are using daily, do not have a gap between each pixel.

The gap is tiny, most people won't even recognize the difference. The light from the main headlight goes through this tiny little gap and comes out from the display in front.

This is a very brief explanation of the technology. I know you are still uncertain about how it works. Already some of the display manufacturers have proven ability to produce and even produced some of the prototypes we are going to use.

By using display layer as DRL bring many other benefits. That includes dynamic turn signal, change design of the DRL as changing the drive mode and even as flash of undercover police car.

Integrated Sandwich Display Window

Future of Automotive window is here.
Our patent-pending technology allows led display to work both side of the display keeping ability to change conditions of the window both transparent and opaque.
